How GPS started
Glomot Penot Systèmes was incorporated by two French engineers, Gilles Glomot and Etienne Penot, in 1989.
The idea for GPS came in response to the tragic death of a forklift truck driver, when his forklift truck accidentally came off the dock while loading a lorry at a local cardboard manufacturer in 1988.
The two engineers conceived a chock-based automatic trailer restraint specifically designed to ensure the safety of the loading bay during the loading and unloading of trucks. They later patented their invention.
Calematic: a vehicle restrain designed to provide optimum safety
The company completed the installation of the first truck restrain – a system called Calematic, in a local French company in 1992.
Since this time, the GPS Calematic system has been adopted by several organisations in France and abroad. Clients include large domestic and international industrial groups in the following sectors:
- Paper / cardboard: Lamirande, Emin Leydier, Kappa Scao, RCO
- Automotive: Ford, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Renault, Michelin, Valeo
- Food: Nestlé, Lu, Contrex, Saint Louis Sucre

A range of solutions to manage loading dock safety
In addition to vehicle restraints, the company has developed new, award winning innovative products to manage loading bay safety including:
- A range of dock bumpers (including a standard bumper and heavy duty bumper)
- A loading dock barrier
- Wheel guides
- Hydraulic truck levelers
To stand out from the competition GPS strive to offer innovative and high standard equipment. Three of their systems are patented.
Working internationally
While export already makes up around 20% of the company’s turnover, GPS is striving to grow its export sector further and is actively developing a network of distributors across the world. To this end the company regularly attends international shows to demonstrate their loading dock equipment.
GPS has won award nominations (Trophies INPI in 2002) and an innovation grant from COFACE for its truck leveler.
